Driving with dirty headlights and in the darkness of night isn’t just unsafe for you, it’s also unsafe for others on the road. One of the easiest ways to prevent unsafe driving as well as making your aging ride look “fresh-from-factory” new is by restoring and cleaning your headlights. All your lenses need is a good polish, and here’s how to do it!
If you have headlights with oxidation or yellowing and want to work by hand, all you need is a basic kit, such as Meguiar’s® Basic Headlight Restoration Kit. With this kit, it is recommended to mask off around the headlights and soak the included pads in water for a minute. Then lightly sand with each of the four different pads working from coarse to finer. Repeat this process until each headlight is clear again.
If your headlights have heavy oxidation and you have a corded drill, check out Meguiar’s® Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit. This kit allows you to have professional results. Before you begin, be sure to start on a clean surface by cleaning the headlights with a glass cleaner. Then lightly sand the headlights with the two different grades of fine sandpaper and water.
The next thing you would do is work the first disc horizontally and the second disc vertically to ensure an even frosted appearance before applying the provided cleaner and polish. With the corded drill, attach the included wool buff pad and apply the polish onto it. Work the polish onto the headlights for 1-2 minutes and wipe away any residue before it dries. Repeat this process, if needed, or until the lenses look new again.
Finalize by overlapping your passes by 50 with a glass cleaner and a medium-coated application of the included headlight coating. Allow to cure and apply a second coat for a thorough seal, and you’re all done!
